A big long weekend of rail development work kicked off this morning in both Auckland and Wellington.
While most businesses have today off, workers were already on the job at 6am around Boston Rd this morning on the Easter rail development work around the new Grafton station.
Most Auckland and Wellington train services are off for Easter , replaced by buses – apart from the brief time Wellington services will cater for Hurricanes rugby fans today.
No so for rugby fans in Auckland, where bus services are the lot for Blues game patrons tomorrow.
Good Friday is one of the few days a year no services run anyway.
The main work in Auckland in the next few days:
- ballasting and signals commissioning at Grafton Station
- second track work around that area
- tamping, ballasting and de-stressing from Sarawia St up to the Parnell Tunnel
- construction continuing inside New Lynn trench
- Level crossing upgrade at Manuroa Rd, Manurewa
- Old platform removals at Manurewa station and Tironui
- Installation of a new diamond at Westfield Junction
- The main Auckland road disruption will be around Victoria Park where the historic Freemans Bay Culvert, built around 1900 to channel a stream from Western Park, will be relocated as part of preparation work for the building of the Victoria Park tunnel.
Wellington’s Easter rail work will be mainly around the Wellington central railway station preparing for the new ocerhead wires and electrification upgrade.
In Christchurch, it’s tram work – the city intersection of Colombo Street and Hereford Street will be closed for almost a week, including over Easter to allow tram tracks to be laid.
